Enseignant de français interagissant avec ses élèves dans une salle de classe en Colombie-Britannique

French teaching jobs in British Columbia are in high demand, but the most sought-after positions require more than just fluency. To stand out, your application must showcase your teaching skills and the core values that define you as an educator.

A French-language school principal we spoke with said, “There’s no point in hiring someone who can speak French but doesn’t know how to teach. I want to know about the candidates’ successful experiences and see that the candidate is familiar with the province’s curriculum.”

Competent Educators

All schools want competent educators. Your application should highlight your skills and, in particular, your ability to:

  • Work as part of a team

  • Accept and integrate feedback

  • Use a variety of teaching strategies

  • Adhere to and apply the school district’s vision

  • Integrate technology into teaching

  • Adapt your curriculum for diversity

  • Build partnerships with parents

Knowing the British Columbia Curriculum

Employers want to know if you’re familiar with the British Columbia curriculum. Familiarize yourself with the Core Competencies and the province’s concept- and competency-based curriculum. Learn about the Big Ideas that will guide the teaching of your subjects. It is essential to have a deep understanding of British Columbia’s approach and the values that guide educators. This includes understanding teaching methods for Indigenous communities and ensuring learning for diverse populations.

These values and competencies are just as important, if not more so, than your fluency in French or previous teaching experience. Remember, an employer won’t hire you just because you speak French. They’ll hire you because they believe you’ll be an extraordinary teacher. Show your ability to teach and your values as an educator.
